Kyoto Rakusai Bamboo Park

"Ho-rai" means the name of mountain in China. But, it is not sure that this bamboo was introduced from China.

Typical clump forming bamboo which means tropical type.
Culm is 3-8m in height, 1-3cm in diameter in Japan.
Bamboo shoot appears from early summer to late autumn, because sometimes new branches not appears within the year.

According to Dr. H. Muroi, this was used for matchlock before some hundreds years ago.

At present, this is like wild growth in Ryukyu Islands to the middle of Honshu.
It is famous to be planted as a windbreak in Kagoshima Prefecture.
